Everything You Need to Know About Indonesia's Time Zones
As a massive archipelago, it is only natural that Indonesia has different time zones in each part of its territory. There are three time zones in Indonesia, namely West Indonesia Time (WIB), Central Indonesia Time (WITA), and East Indonesia Time (WIT). So, what do these time zones mean and how do I calculate the time difference from around the world?
What does West Indonesia Time (WIB) mean?
The western part of Indonesia follows the West Indonesia Time (WIB) zone, which includes the entire island of Sumatra, the entire island of Java, West Kalimantan and also Central Kalimantan. So, when visiting cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Batam, or Pontianak, don't forget to adjust your watch time to the WIB time zone. Because Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, this region is the benchmark for time differences around the world.
What about Central Indonesian Time (WITA)?
The Central Indonesian Time Zone (WITA) has a time difference of one hour with WIB. WITA applies to the central part of Indonesia, such as South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, all of Sulawesi Island, all of Bali Island, Nusa Tenggara
Furthermore, what is Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT)?
Are you interested in visiting cities like Maluku or other places in Papua? If so, don't forget to set your watch time to the Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT) zone. This time zone has a two-hour difference from WIB and only applies to the Maluku and Papua regions, including North Maluku and West Papua.
Time Zones and Prayer Times in Indonesia
As a Muslim-majority country, mosques are easily found in every region of Indonesia and will remind people to perform the five daily prayers. Prayer times across Indonesia differ due to time zone differences. The earliest prayer times in the morning are at 4-5am, just as the sun rises. Next is around midday at 12pm, then 3pm and 6pm at dusk, before ending in the evening at 7pm.
