What is the currency in Indonesia?
The Rupiah is the official currency of Indonesia, issued and controlled by Bank Indonesia. The currency code is IDR with the symbol Rp. By law, all transactions must be made in Rupiah and daily exchange rate updates can be found in newspapers, the internet or online apps. Credit card use is widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and major stores in Indonesia.
Banknote denominations in Indonesia consist of Rp1000, Rp2000, Rp5000, Rp10,000, Rp20,000, Rp50,000 and Rp100,000. Meanwhile, coins in circulation include Rp1000, Rp500, Rp200, Rp100, and Rp50.
Where can I exchange and buy currency?
You can exchange foreign currency at all banks in major Indonesian cities and money changers, most tourist resorts also provide money exchange facilities. However, if you want to travel to a remote place, it is advisable to exchange money beforehand. If you need a large amount of foreign currency and do not have a foreign currency bank account, it is best to place an order the day before, as local banks do not keep a lot of foreign currency in small branches.
Are ATMs easily accessible?
All major cities and tourist destinations in Indonesia are equipped with ATMs in international networks, such as International Plus/Cirrus or Alto. Withdrawal limits are set according to the country's bank regulations. ATM machines have two currency denominations, consisting of Rp50,000 thousand and Rp100,000 thousand.
